The specimens cited above (except those at IBUG) were cited by Smith (in Smith & Downs, 1974) as var. palmeri, to which also the description applies. The var. longebracteata was described as having the floral bracts elongate, equalling or exceeding the pedicels, but was not contrasted in any other way with var. palmeri. In flowers of the holotype of var. longebracteata, which I have seen through the courtesy of C. L. Lundell, the sepals are like those in var. palmeri, i.e., not at all winged but rounded or obscurely keeled on the backs. The floral bracts vary in length to such an extent that they do not provide a very satisfactory way of separating taxa, but the sepals provide in many taxa a better diagnostic character. I have no doubt that var. palmeri and var. longebracteata are conspecific. See also a note under P. compostelae. —SeeMcVaugh 1989
