Abstract:—(The genus Billbergia Thunb. (Bromeliaceae) in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil). The genus Billbergia Thunb. comprises 64 species occurring in two centers of diversity: Atlantic Forest and Amazon Forest. In Rio de Janeiro State, the genus is represented by 14 species found in Atlantic forest and restinga: B. amoena (Lodd.) Lindl., B. brasiliensis L.B. Sm., B. distachia (Vell.) Mez, B. euphemiae E. Morren, B. horrida Regel, B. iridifolia (Nees & Mart.) Lindl., B. lymanii E. Pereira & Leme, B. macracantha E. Pereira, B. pyramidalis (Sims) Lindl., B. sanderiana E. Morren, B. tweediana Baker, B. vittata Brongn. ex C.Morel and B. zebrina (Herb.) Lindl. Here we present descriptions, figures and notes on taxonomy and geographic distribution of the species.
