Abstract:—A single species of Pitcairnia (P. bromelii]olia) comprising three well-defined and geographically discontinuous biotypes, occurs in Jamaica. Extensive field studies and transplant experiments have made possible an understanding of the ecology, variation, and distribution of natural populations. Emphasis is placed on the variability of traditional characters and a description of some previously overlooked scale patterns and types which serve to distinguish varieties bromelii]olia, gramini]olia Griseb, and wynteri R.
