Abstract:—During my trip to the coastal parts of southern Peru, I had a great opportunity to admire splendid landscapes of Lomas, also known as 'mist oases'. Lomas ('hills' in English) are areas in to coastal deserts of Peru that are 'watered' by regular fogs. Lomas range in size and their fauna and flora often includes various endemic animal and plant species. The coastal desert is almost without any noticeable vegetation, apart from the more humid Lomas and river valleys that are often populated by people and heavily used for agriculture. The coastal deserts are almost rainless and the specific vegetation of the Lomas can survive only thanks to dense fogs which roll inland from the Pacific. The mist is called 'garua' in Peru and 'camanchaca' in Chile.
