Abstract:—Rainer Hasselmann, the late seed manager of the German Bromeliad Society (DBG), asked me in April 2016 to write an article about proliferation of bromeliads by seed for Die Bromelie because there is nearly no information available on this. It’s a pity that he cannot read this article any more, but I’d like to fulfill my promise with my deepest condolences for his passing. I obtained Catopsis seed from him in March 2016 (Fig. 1). The DBG-numbers were 100048, 100049 and 100050, accompanied with origin data including an EM number. According to the origin data, these seeds were collected by the late Renate Ehlers in 2004 (100049 and 100050) and 2005 (100048). Because these seeds were collected more than ten years ago, Rainer was afraid that they would not germinate well. However, I have experiences growing Catopsis sp. from old seed in vitro with good results and therefore expected their successful germination if sown with the optimal method.
