Abstract:—The present work deals with the systematics, phylogeny and evolution of the genus Pitcairnia and its species. Although Pitcairnia is the second largest genus of the bromeliad family with over 400 species, little is known about relationships. In previous molecular studies on the phylogeny of the bromeliad family, only a few Pitcairnia species were regularly included (e.g. Horres et al. 2000; Givnish et al. 2011); the only more extensive phylogenetic investigation to date was based exclusively on morphological characteristics (Saraiva et al. 2015). A comprehensive molecular systematic processing of the genus is missing to date. When and where was Pitcairnia created? How did the genus spread? When and where did it diversify? These exciting and open questions are pursued in this work with the help of sequencing of plastid and nuclear DNA segments.
