Abstract:—Harry Luther described Guzmania sanguinea var. comosa in 1989 based on a plant collected in Colombia that flowered under cultivation at the Marie Selby Botanic Gardens. The defining feature of this variety is the very narrow extension of the inflorescence axis above the flowers and the production of a tuft of bright red, sterile floral bracts near the top. In the original description, he noted that the plant had been known in cultivation since.
