Abstract:—On the balance of probabilities the plant named as F.bicolor, but poorly described by Ruiz & Pavon, was probably what came to be called F.pitcairnifolia in cultivation. The species F.pitcairnifolia hort. tends to predominate in northern Chile whilst F.bicolor hort. primarily occurs in more central regions, where it is often epiphytic. The vague location of the plant collected by R & P. was given as ‘near Concepcion’ is the only strong reason for potentially justifying the change, but it is by no means adequately resolved. (The map plotting the locations of various herbarium specimens viewed by the authors, published subsequently in Linn Bot J in inconclusive with the identity of two northern collections being indeterminable as to species. The relatively few locations identified would be far too few to reach any definite conclusion on the matter.). A second possible though insubstantial reason would be the R&P’s description mentioned that the plant was ‘growing amongst rocks’.
