Abstract:—A taxonomic revision of Encholirium is presented. The genus is exclusively Brazilian and its distribution is intimately associated with rock outcrops, the majority of species being found on rocky outcrops of the cerrado and caatinga and campos rupestres of the Espinhaço Range of Minas Gerais. Only two species occur on inselbergs inside the domain of the atlantic forest. In the present treatment 23 species are recognized for the genus. The transfer of Dyckia biflora to Encholirium is being suggested, plus a new species, while two names remained doubtful, and 13 binomials are placed under synonymy . The characters that have shown to be more relevant to the circumscription of the species of Encholirium were: the habit (including plant height, diameter and general aspect of the rosette), size of scape bracts, size of floral bracts in relation to flowers, pedicel length, form and coloration of sepals and petals and position of the stamens and the stile in relation to the corola. Identification keys for the species of Encholirium are presented, as well as descriptions, illustrations, geographic distributions, comments on taxonomic and nomenclatural aspects and some aspects in relation to the fenology and conservation of each species.
