German title:—Eine neue und sehr ornamentale Bromelie aus West-Bahia, Brasilien: Encholirium pierre-braunii
Abstract:—Back in 1999, searching for botanical novelties in isolated regions of western Bahia/Brazil, the author in companionship with Dr. Pierre Braun from Germany discovered a remarkable and very unique new bromeliad growing at a lonesome place in crevices of limestone rocks of the so-called Bambui formation. These carstic outcrops belong to the Serra do Ramalho range and are situated in a transition zone between Caatinga and Campo Cerrado.
The terminal inflorescences showed immediately that this new plant was a new representative of Encholirium, but it differs strongly from all other known species by the rosettes with long-attenuate to caudate, dark vinaceous to blackish or blackish-green leaves and the strong, well developed distinct whitish-silvery teeth, but also by the inflorescences with long pedicels. For that reason it is an extremely imposing and unmistakable species.Published names (1):Encholirium pierrebraunii
