Abstract:—The genus Tillandsia with 696 species is by far the largest genus in the family, against Pitcairnia with 405 species. Within the 59 genera (including two nothogenera), there are four other genera that have over 200 species, Aechmea (282), Guzmania (217), Puya (224) and Vriesea (256). There are a total of 3505 species (excluding 567 infra-specific taxa) in the family today (Gouda, cont. upd.). An average of 46 new taxa per year has been described over the last ten years, including new combinations. If my calculations are correct, the number of species recognized in the last monograph of the family (Smith & Downs, 1974, 1977, 1979) was about 2400 and an additional 1495 species have been published since that time (on an average 40per year). That would make a total of 3895, which is 390 more than the real species number signifying that about 390 species were synonymised after that monograph.
