Abstract:—T. supermexicana is a large bromeliad with spectacular inflorescence, but very rare in cultivation. Growing in the Sierra Campo Morado it was found 1953 and described 1977 by Matuda. The inflorescence is com pound of up to 40 spikes, characreristic are the long flower bracts ( 4 cm). The further lo cations were found in Mexico DF. lt is growing together with other rare species, such as T. quaquaflorifera, T. pentasticha, T. ilseana, T. ventosfriosensis, T. hromadnikiana, and T. alf. nuyooensis. In the Sierra Madre del Sur, Qaxaca, 1800 m, was found a new variety, T. supermexicana MATUDA var. pendula L. HROMADNIK var. nov., which differs from the type by its smaller size, pendent inflorescence (25 cm long, 15 spikes), lower primary bracts longer than the spikes, shorter internodes (1.2 cm; type: 2 cm). Albeit different in habit, a further closely related tillandsia is referred to T. supermexicana MATUDA var. saxicola L. HROMADNIK var. nov., growing on rocks in Guerrero, Mexico, 2000 m. As typical for lithophytic tillandsias many pups were developed at the base. lt can be distinguished from the type by shorter, thick leaves; smaller sheats, light-brown at the inside, erect and forming a more narrow rosette; inflorescence compact cylindric; posterior sepals 5 mm connate, coriaceous with hyalin margin.
