As T. durangensis Rauh & Ehlers it is a rock dweller, but is different from the latter by dark purplish brown leaf sheaths, shorter peduncle and shorter fertile part of the inflorescence, wider spikes, wider floral bracts, and longer and wider petals. The collection site is located at an elevation of only 800 m, whereas T. durangensis occurs at about 2000 m elevation in Estado Durango.
