Abstract:—Introduction On his long journey to South America, 1799- 1804, Alexander von Humboldt collected a huge number of plants and brought them to Europe. Among them was a bromeliad which was published as Tillandsia humboldtii by John Gilbert Baker in 1889 (Baker 1889: 203). Baker obviously had no information about the collection locality because hè stated "probably Mexico". Later, this was corrected by Smith & Downs (1977: 740) to "Colombia or Ecuador".
