<- Ananas nanus (L.B.Sm.) L.B.Sm[as Ananas nanus (L.B. Sm.) L.B.Sm.]

Observations: —Gouda in Selbyana 20 (1); 30-9. 2000
Ananas nanus is the smallest of these three species and probably restricted to central and northern Brazil. The material cited from the Guianas in Smith & Downs (1979), is more appropriately placed under A. ananassaides.
Distinguishing characters of Ananas nanus are the leaves are not strongly channeled as in A. ananassoides and not strongly revolute (when dry), relatively wider and more abruptly ending in a spinose point; upper scape-bracts serrulate (not as fine as A. ananassoides), relatively short and ending in a spinose point; the inflorescences are few-flowered (about 10) and bear a distinct coma at anthesis.
