Diagnose: —A P. brunnescens Lyman B. Smith versimiliter affinis, foliarum laminis angustioribus, bracteis florigeris et floribus valde reflexis, sepalis lepidotis differt.

Observations: —Pitcairnia altoatratoensis resembles P Bakeri, P. barrigae L. B. Smith, P. brongniartiana Andre, P. brunnescens L. B. Smith, and P. fusca Luther. The above species share the densely cylindrical inflorescence, closely imbricated floral bracts, and relatively large flowers. Other notable similarities between P. altoatratoensis and some of the above species are summarized in table 2
