plant lacking rhizomes, flowering ca 70 cm tall. leaves ca 30, very densely rosulate, subcoriaceous, forming at base a quite inflated, narrowly funnelform rosette; sheath broadly obovate, erect, ca 10 x 8 cm, dark brown mainly abaxially, densely brown-lepidote; blade triangular, narrowly acute, suberect to spreading and slightly ascending toward apex, ca 11 x 4.5 cm, green with exception of the dark-red margins, completely covered by white trichomes abaxially, adaxially densely white-lepidote but becoming glabrescent with age. inflorescence: peduncle suberect, ca 25 cm long, ca 0.8 cm in diameter, purplishgreen, glabrous; peduncle bracts erect, ovatelanceolate, the basal ones with acuminate slightly recurved apex, the upper ones obtuse and apiculate, slightly exceeding the internodes; fertile part simple, suberectascending toward apex, sublinear, ca 25 x 3 cm, distichously 20-flowered; rachis ca 6 mm in diameter, stout, geniculate, angled, green to purplish-green, glabrous; floral bracts suborbicular, obtuse, ca 20 x 18 mm, subdensely white-lepidote mainly along the margins, ecarinate, slightly gibbous, purplish-green, with short decurrent auricles at base, about equaling the base of the sepals and not completely enfolding them, not secund with the flowers. flowers ca 40 mm long, anthesis nocturnal, not evidently fragrant nor garlic-scented, densely arranged, nearly erect and slightly secund at anthesis, pedicels ca 7 mm long, stout; sepals broadly elliptic, emarginate, ca 20 x 17 mm, purplish-green, sparsely and very inconspicuously white-lepidote, ecarinate, thick at base; petals broadly obovate, apex emarginate, spreading at anthesis, ca 36 x 23 mm, very pale greenish-yellow, bearing at base 2 asymmetrical, subobovate, coarsely long-fimbriate, ca 10 x 4 mm appendages adnate to the petals for ca 5 mm. stamens disposed in two rows with three of them on each lateral side of the corolla at anthesis; filament the antesepalous ones flexed about 1/3 of its length above the base, the antepetalous ones straight; anther ca 8 mm long, dorsifixed near the base, base and apex obtuse. pistil: stigma tubolaciniate, denticulate, green; ovules shortly caudate.
