plant short stemmed, terrestrial with a densely spreading rosette of horizontally spreading leaves. leaves rich green above with a dull green longitudinal median area becoming pale or whitish upon drying, undulate-rippled, linear lanceolate, attenuate-caudate, 18–23 cm long, 1.9–2 cm wide, paler green below with minute hairs over longitudinal whitish striations, minutely serrulate only near the base on the adult leaves, elsewhere entire on adult leaves. inflorescence capitate, compact, composed of several divisions, but not obviously digitate, 5 cm in diameter; primary bracts and other bracts subtending subdivisions of the inflorescence much broader than the floral bracts, rigid, subcoriaceous, broadly lanceolate, acuminate, 2.5 cm long, 0.8 cm wide below the middle, rose-colored or with white or pink near the apex, the outermost ones more elongated, caudate, white with elongated green apex, deltoid-lanceolate or deltoid, 3–4.2 cm long, 0.9–1.5 cm wide in the lower portion; floral bracts firmly membranaceous, erect-ascending, rose-colored in upper half, white in lower 1/3, lanceolate, acuminate, 2–2.5 cm long, 0.4–0.5 cm wide, finely striolate, microscopically serrulate with minute teeth along margins, papillate-granular on outer surface. flowers: sepals pale rose in upper portion, white at base, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, 17–19 mm long, 3 mm wide below the middle, subcarinate; corolla white, the petals free nearly to the base, membranous, linear-lanceolate, obtuse, 16–17 nm long, 4 mm wide. stamens inserted near the base of the petals, filaments 6 mm long; anther pale-yellow, linear, 5 mm long. pistil: ovary pale green, superior, 3.5 mm long. fruits (old) oblong, 8–10 mm long, 3 mm wide.
