; 0 flowering to 50 cm high, leaves about 20, rosulate, forming a tubular utriculum to 10 cm long at the base. leaves ligulate, 30–50 cm long, in no way petiolate; sheath narrow ovate, 6–10 cm long, inside purple , outside green, both sides inconspicuously lepidote, blades linear, ca 35 cm long, 12 mm wide at max, channeled, tip a narrow spine, both sides green or purplish, inconspicuously lepidote, edges sparsely spined, spines ca 1 mm long, or entire, peduncle erect, 17 cm long, 3 mm diam., green, glabrous, internodes 15–25 mm long, peduncle bracts lanceolate acuminate, 30–40 mm long, glabrous, longer than the internodes, inflorescence simple, with lax spike, sometimes with 2–3 branches at the base, 5–10 cm long, much exceeding the leaves, floral bracts ovate, apiculate, 4 mm long, strongly nerved,equaling the ovary or shorter, flower suberect, 20 mm long, sepals purple, strongly asymmetric, in no way keeled, 9 mm long, mucronate, 2 mm connate at the base, petals purple, blades elliptic, spreading at anthesis, 14 mm long, conspicuously without ligules,when living has 2 callouses high adnate, in a dry state disappearing, stamens exceeding the throat of the corolla at anthesis, filaments complanate with an acute tip, series i free, series ii high adnate to the petals, anthers sub-linear, 4 mm long, tip apiculate, dorsifixed near the base, pollen grains elliptic, biporate, ovary sub-globose, 4 mm thick, glabrous , becoming smooth, epigynous tube 2 mm long, style 11 mm long, equaling the anthers,placentae joined to the tip of the locules, ovules obtuse.
