Aechmea purpurea Baker  diagnose
leaves 12–20 in a utricular rosette, suberect, lanceolate from a dilated base, 2 ft; long, 1 ½ - 2 in; broad at the middle, plain green, neither mottled nor banded on the back, narrowed to the point, the marginal teeth minute. inflorescence: peduncle above a foot long; bract-leaves large, lanceolate, tinged with red; floral bracts a dozen or more, ovate, acute, serrated, squarrose, bright red, 2–3 in; long, the flowers placed not only in a cluster in the centre, but also in the axils of several of the outer bracts. flowers about an inch long.
