plant to 20 cm high, offsets to 20 cm long, 8–10 mm thick, the axis emerging from the base of the leaf rosette, ascending, densely covered with basal leaves, which are sessile and completely cover the base, inflated, light green, often light brownish violet, scattered silvery scales, 38–42 mm long, to 30 mm wide, elliptic-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate with short spiny tip. leaves rosette to 40 cm wide, with 24–30 leaves, funnel to 15 cm high; leaves* to 35 cm long, upper half of the funnel flat, wide; sheath elliptic, 11 cm long, 8 cm wide, violet, at least toward the outside leaves top side violet, underneath green, both sides scattered (at the base more dense) brown lepidote; the sheath gradually merges with the blade or the upper half of the sheath tapers a little; blade broad-long to long-lanceolate, to 24 cm long, 5.2 cm wide, the tip rounded to weakly incised, and short spiny tip; edges smooth, with a few dull spines to the sheath, light green, rarely with red overlay and red edged, top side very scattered underneath more dense especially between the nerves, small silvery lepidote. inflorescence simple, to 15 flowered peduncle 2.8 cm long, the bottom and the top ca 8–10 mm thick, bracts at the base curved, with short spiny tip, triangular-lanceolate and narrow-lanceolate, tipped, pink, predominantly the top side with scattered, the tips with dense brownish scales; floral bracts longish-oval, short acuminate, 3.8–4.5 cm long, to 0.7 cm wide, half enclosing the ovary and flower tube. flowers: pedicel 4 mm long, flat, 3x 2 mm thick; sepals to 28 mm long, 9 mm wide, joined for 8mm, lanceolate, asymmetric, tipped, the wide edges membranaceous, middle section scattered silvery scaled; petals narrow, longish-lanceolate, asymmetric, 38 mm long, to 5 mm wide, white with blue tips, joined together for 16mm. flowers tube at the base 3 mm thick, above 5 mm thick stamens 6 mm long, light yellow, style 30 mm long, yellowish white, stigma lobes 3.5 mm long, yellowish white. pistil: ovary narrow elliptic, to 14 mm long, light pink.Edited from : Rauh 1983b.
