plant propagating by scaly stolons 15–20 cm long, 12 mm thick. leaves ca 12 in a dense rosette; sheath forming a tank 9 cm wide, suborbicular, 9 cm long, dark violet, lepidote throughout; blade recurving, flat, narrowly triangular, attenuate to a long spine, 10–15 cm long, 5 cm wide, chartaceous, sparsely lepidote throughout, densely and irregularly serrate with irregularly curved spines 1.5 mm long. inflorescence comŽpound, 8–10-flowered; primary bracts elliptic, acute, exceeded by the sepals; floral bracts broadly triangular, 17 mm long, exceeded by the sepals, 5 mm wide, strongly carinate. flowers: pedicel obscure; sepals free, asymmetric, reflexed-mucronate, 11 mm long, 3 mm wide, strongly carinate, green becoming violet in fruit; petals erect, free, equaling the sepals, 1.5 mm wide, white. stamens of series i free, of series ii wholly adnate to petals; anther 1.5 mm long. pistil: ovary clavate, 7 mm long; placentae apical; ovules few, caudate. fruits slightly enlarged from ovary, maturing at different times in same inflorŽescence; seeds oblong-ovoid, 3.5 mm long, 1 mm wide, castaneous.
