The name Aechmea thyrsiflora has been published in Mart. Fl. Bras. iii. III. 332. by Mez (1892) and must be considered synonymous (or is a later homonym) of Aechmea mertensii Schult.f., that is the name in current use for this taxon (read species).

Synonyms are mostly later name publications for earlier described taxa. Could be earlier recognized species that later proved to be indistinguishable with a better knowledge of the taxon variation, or described in a different genus (compare homonym and basionym).
