Habitat: Epiphytically on the higher tree branches of an Atlantic Forest fragment, ca. 500 m. Elev.

Etymology: The specific name of Hohenbergia barbarespina portrays the very dense disposition of the spines along the basal portion of the leaf margins, as well as their proportionally longer length in comparison with the closer relative.
