Etymology: The name of this species pays homage to Jones Caldas da Silva, medical doctor and regional director of the Sociedade Brasileira de Bromelias in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. For years, this bromeliad enthusiast has been collecting plants and gathering data on the bromeliads of Brazil. His collection near Porto Alegre, one of the most representative in the country in terms of species diversity, has an effective numbering system for keeping track of plant origins, which makes it of special interest to scientists and conservationists.

Phenology: This species flowers mainly in November and December
