Type: BRAZIL: Bahia: Jacobina, 1600 ft., 18 Jun. 1939, "grows under small scrub-desert, leaves 6 to 9 in., light green above, gray glaucous beneath, leaves slightly grooved, strong teeth whirled and recurving, flowers pure white in center of plant, bract dark maroon pink", M. B. Foster 98 (holotype, US!)

Distribution: Brazil: Paraiba to north Bahia

Habitat: in general area of caatingas, a very shrubby, dry, and succulent vegetation, in semi-shady places, 200—550 m. Elev.

Etymology: Named for Bahia, the state of origin of the species described.
