Etymology: Hechtia iltisii is named in honor of Dr. Hugh Iltis, Director of the Herbarium at the University of Wisconsin. During his distinguished career, Dr. Iltis has had an active interest in the flora of the Sierra de Manantlan (Jalisco), as well as in the origins of maize. Dr. Iltis, with Dr. Mike Nee, first collected this species and brought it to our attention.
