Taxonomic Notes:
- considered synonym of Aechmea saxicola L.B. Smith —See Canela et al. 2003 p. 195
- Synonymy with Aechmea saxicola is not accepted: inflorescence inserted in the foliar rosette and the sterile bracts longer than the inflorescence in A. hostilis, unlike A. saxicola which the inflorescence are excluded of the rosette and the sterile bracts are shorter than the inflorescence. —See Sousa & Wanderley 2015 p. 41
