Abstract:—Background: The angiosperm family Bromeliaceae comprises 3906 species, almost all of them restricted to the Neotropics (a single species is native to West Africa). The family is characterised by exceptionally high morphological and ecological plasticity and also a very low sequence variability in the up to now studied markers.
