Abstract:—T. guatemalensis is a widespread species, occuring from Panama to southern Mexico.: Somewhat differing are plants to be found in Oaxaca near Pochutla, Mexico. Albeit closely related to T. guatemalensis, the difference justifies to describe them as a new species. Leaves and the inflorescence are crimson-violet, the internodes are longer, the pnmary bracts are shorter in relation to the branches, which are longer. The spikes are more narrow too, but twice as long as those of T. guatemalensis. The rhachis is visible in the fertile part, the flower bracts (22 mm) and sepals (18 mm) are longer. The petals are 35 mm long (T. guatemalensis 18 mm), almost black-violet, not blue with white base. The species was named for E. Makrinius, who discovered the plant in 1937.
