Abstract:— The various editions of JOHNSON'S Gardener's Dictionary (1846–1917) are discussed and the three ‘Kew’ editions (1882, 1894, 1917) examined in the context of contemporary horticultural and botanical publications, notably those issued by nurserymen and botanic gardens. Besides some 280 additions to Index kewensis and Index filicum, there are numerous changes in authorities of currently used species names, a change in Acalypha and restoration of Cyrtanthus × hybridus, while new combinations in Canistrum and Rhododendron and a new name in Maytenus are proposed.

Taxonomy:Canistrum fragrans Mabberley says 'clonotype' Belg. Hort. 29 (1879) t.13 (=Edmundoa/Canistrum), but this is highly unlikely, not fitting the description. (p.271).—Guzmania fragrans 'clonotype' selected here (is not a type!) and a new combination created, Canistrum fragrans which is also a Nomen nudum. (p.271).
