Abstract:—Walter Till: A New Subspecies of Tillandsia landbeckii PHILIPPI Tillandsia landbeckii is living under extreme conditions in the coastal desert of Chile and Peru. During a trip to the central and southern part of Peru 1982, together with E. Vitek, Vienna, plants were found similar to T. landbeckii, but differing in several characteristics to be sufficient to describe a new subspecies, T. landbeckii PHILIPPI subsp. andina W. TILL. It differs by brown, fragrant petals, the flowers are open for external pollination. This subspecies is distributed from the departments La Libertad to Cuzco, 2000-3100 m; it is occuring also at the Lomas of Atiquipa (belonging to the coastal desert) growing on rocks, 250- 270 m, without any difference to the type from higher elevations. Together with this subspecies another variety was found in the valley of Rio Vilcanota, differing by stiffer leaves, longer internodes an silvery adpressed scales, to be described as Tillandsia landbeckii PHILIPPI subsp. andina W. TILL var. rigidor W. TILL.
