Abstract:—Tillandsia tenebra L. HROMADNIK et W. TILL, spec, nov., a new species from Argentina, growing usually on rocks in La Rioja, Catamarca and Buenos Aires. All the other species of subgen. Diaphoranthema grow epiphytically and prefer higher elevations. The habitus resembles T. gilliesii BAKER, from which it differs by longer, distichous, very densely imbricate leaves which are flat towards the base, the softer and longer blades, the fagrant flowers, and the much reflexed black-violet-brown petals. From Tillandsia caliginosa W. TILL it differs by the shorter, stiffer and succulent, densely adpressed lepidote, densely imbricate leaves, which are flat toward the base, the shorter, glabrous scape, the shorter, more compact inflorecence of 1-2 (rarely 3) flowers and the shorter floral bracts.
