Abstract:—The original description of the insufficiently known Pitcairnia platystemon Mez is completed and a new related species, P chiquitana R. Visquez & P. L. Ibisch, is described, illustrated and compared with P. platystemon, a local endemic from the same region, the Chiquitano mountains in eastern Bolivia. The two species are related but P chiquitana differs by the smaller size of the plant, the simple inflorescence, the inconspicuous and smaller floral bracts, longer pedicels and petals. Photos and botanical illustrations of both species are published for the first time.
