leaves 12 to 15, suberect-arcuate, densely rosulate, thin in texture, forming a broad funnelform rosette; sheath elliptic, 10–13 x 7–9 cm, purplish and densely brown-lepidote; blade sublinear, slightly if at all narrowed toward the base, 20–25 x 3.5–5.5 cm, sparsely and minutely white-lepidote, green, the inner ones reddish-purple toward the base at anthesis, apex acute to subrounded and apiculate, margins subdensely to densely spinulose, spines ca 0.5 mm long, 3–5 mm apart. inflorescence: peduncle ca 5 cm long, distinctly shorter than the leaf sheaths; peduncle bracts the basal ones foliaceous, slightly exceeding the inflorescence, the upper ones ovate, acute to subrounded and apiculate, densely spinulose toward the apex, brown-lepidote, ca 5 cm long, almost completely concealing the peduncle; fertile part once-branched to twice-branched, centrally simple, rosulate-capitate, submultiutricular, 5–10 cm long, 6–8 cm in diameter at apex, sunken in the rosette and slightly exceeding the leaf sheaths but not elevated above the rosette; primary bracts broadly ovate, apex acute and apiculate, erect to suberect, red and densely spinulose near the apex, lepidote, the basal ones 7–11 x 5–7 cm; fascicles ca 6, the basal ones 45–55 x 25-¬35 mm, 8-to–15-flowered, subpulvinate to subcomplanate; floral bracts apex subacute and minutely apiculate, erect or subcucullate-incurved, entire, 35–47 x 15–25 mm, membranaceous, sparsely lepidote with entire or fimbriate trichomes, about equaling to slightly shorter than the sepals, those of the fascicles ovate, those of the simple central part of the inflorescence oblong-elliptic and ecarinate. flowers 5–6 cm long, pedicels complanate, 3–4 mm long; sepals narrowly-elliptic, apex acute and apiculate, 25–30 x 8 mm, connate for 5–7 mm, membranaceous, ecarinate, sparsely white-lepidote adaxially; petals ca 40 x 6 mm, connate for ca 30 mm long, tube greenish, lobes obovate, ca 10 mm long, white, apex obtuse to inconspicuously emarginate, not cucullate, bearing 2 callosities at base. stamens: anther ca 6 mm long, apex apiculate. pistil: stigma ellipsoid, lobes with shortly lacerate margins; ovary narrowly ellipsoid, sometimes complanate, 10–14 mm long, ca 5 mm in diameter. fruits red toward the apex, persistent calyx greenish.
