leaves 15 to 20, suberect to spreading, subcoriaceous, forming a dense, broad funnelform rosette; sheath elliptic, 16 x 9–10 cm, purplish-wine, densely brown-lepidote; blade linear, not narrowed toward the base, 30–40 x 5–6.5 cm, green or reddish near the apex, abaxially inconspicuously but subdensely white-lepidote, adaxially glabrescent, apex acute and apiculate, margins subdensely to densely spinose, spines pale-brown, 1–2 mm long, 3–5 mm apart. inflorescence: peduncle 4–6 cm long, 0.8–1 cm in diameter, distinctly shorter than the leaf sheaths; peduncle bracts resembling the primary bracts but smaller, not completely concealing the peduncle, the upper ones involucrate; reddish toward the apex; fertile part once-branched, centrally simple, obconic-capitate, 5–6 cm long, 7–10 cm in diameter at apes, equaling to slightly exceeding the leaf sheaths but not elevated above the rosette; primary bracts ovate, apex acute and apiculate, suberect, sheath and blade not distinct, green toward the base and reddish or red toward the apex, inconspicuously white-lepidote toward the apex, the inner ones subdensely and irregularly spinose, spines 0.5–1 mm long, to subentire, the lower ones ca 7.5 x 5.5 cm, densely spinose toward the apex; fascicles ca 4, the lower ones ca 10-flowered, elliptic, ca 55 x 30 mm, subflabellate-pulvinate, with peduncles ca 6 mm long; floral bracts narrowly ovate, apex acute, entire, 40–45 x 1.5–2.5 mm, carinate to ecarinate, green to reddish toward apex, inconspicuously white-lepidote, slightly exceeded by the sepals. flowers ca 55 mm long, pedicels ca 3 mm long; sepals obovate-¬lanceolate, apex attenuate-acuminate, subsymmetrical, ca 25 x 8 mm, connate for 3–4 mm, ecarinate, green, glabrous; petals apex subacute and not cucullate, ca 40 x 5 mm, connate for ca 25 mm, white toward the base, light blue toward the apex, after anthesis slightly spirally twisted and reddish, bearing two distinct longitudinal callosities equaling filament length. stamens: anther ca 6 mm long, apex apiculate, dorsifixed at 1/3 their length above the base. pistil: stigma margins undulate and crenulate; ovary narrowly ellipsoid, ca 20 mm long, ca 6 mm in diameter, subcomplanate; epigynous tube ca 3 mm long.
