Mezobromelia lymansmithii Rauh & Barthlott  protologue
plant stemless, flowering to 3m high. leaves numerous, forming a large rosette, 90 cm high, and to 1.3m diam., leaf sheath not sharply distinct, broad ovate, to 25 cm long, 18 cm wide, both sides dark castaneous scaled; blade lingulate, to 60 cm long, 13 cm wide, green, underneath laxly scaled, scales in rows. inflorescence: peduncle to 110 cm long, erect, 3 cm thick at base, glabrous, green to carmine red, peduncle bracts dense, longer than the internodes, the bottom ones sub foliate with long carmine red sheath and green recurved blade, underneath laxly scaled; fertile part 1.5 –2m long, pyramidal in outline, the bottom 70 cm diam., twice-branched, towards the top once-branched, with carmine red glabrous axis; primary bracts shell like, with long dark carmine red sheath and green recurved blade whose underneath is laxly scaled, shorter than the sterile section of the side spikes of the first order; secondary bracts 3 cm long, with red sheath and yellow blade, longer than the sterile base of the second order; first order spikes erect, to erect with the top bent over, the bottom ones (including the top spike) to 35 cm long, with shiny carmie red axis and a 10 cm long, leaved, unbranched base; spikes distichous, becoming secund at flowering, with 1–2 cm long, leaved, stem, to 10 cm long, 2 cm wide, beginning dense, post floral lax, 8–10 flowered; rachis flexuous, wing edged, carmine red. flowers at anthesis pointing to one side but touching, sessile; floral bracts to 2.5 cm long, acuminate, ecarinate, towards the tip weakly keeled, smooth when fresh, nerved when dry, upper side scattered scales, a little larger than the sepals, at the base carmie red, towards the tip pale yellow; sepals to 2.3 cm long, acuminate, the posterio ones weakly keeled, connate for ca 4mm, pale yellow; petals 3.5–4.5 cm long, joined in a 3 cm long tube exceeding the sepal, the free section recurved, lingulate, obtuse, about 1 cm from the base with 2 small lacerated ligulae, pale lemon yellow. stamens shorter than the petals, white yellow filaments joined to the tube and brown anthers, ovary small, superior, yellow. pistil: style as long as the petal.
