plant stemless, flowering to 35 cm high. leaves numerous, forming a rosette to 20 cm high and 40 cm wide; sheath distinct, wide-oval, to 5 cm long, 4 cm wide, pale light brown; blade narrow-ligulate, acuminate, to 20 cm long, above the sheath 2.5 cm wide, plain green, on both sides appressed scattered scales. inflorescence: peduncle upright, thin, green, densely enclosed by the peduncle bracts; the basal ones subfoliate and green, the upper ones blade-less, adjacent to the peduncle, narrow–3-angled, sharply acuminate, membranaceous, thin, pale violet, longer than the internodes; fertile part simple, erect to strongly bent at right-angles and, up again with the end climbing, thin-cylindrical, about 12 cm long, at the time of anthesis 1 cm thick, with about 20 spirally arranged flowers; these erect and adjacent to the rachis, subsessile, to 2.5 cm long; rachis green, glabrous, flexuose, visible; internodes 3–5 mm long; floral bracts longlish-lanceolate, acuminate, 1.6–1.8 cm long, 0.7 cm wide, dark-wine-red with violet top, (in the failing light shiny violet), ecarinate, very scattered scales, smooth, however soon drying off and then strongly nerved, exceeding the sepals. flowers: sepals membranaceous, narrow–3-angled, acuminate, whitish, violet dots, green to the base, 1.3 cm long, 4 mm wide, the adaxial pair 3–5 mm high connate, the abaxial free; petals narrow-ligulate, erect, only a little enfolded, to 2.5 cm long, prefloral pale violet, at the time of anthesis white, postfloral pale brownish, its lobes 9 mm free, blunt. stamens with ribbon-like, highly joined to the petal, filaments and black pollen sacks, deeply enclosed, shorter than the white style, but also not protuding. pistil: ovary longish, 7 mm high, green.
