; 0 ample collections of tillandsia insularis mez have made it possible to distinguish two varieties; 1 variety latilamina has wider leaves, usually 4.3–7.0 cm wide at the blade, some purple is usually evident either on the sheath or blade or both, the outer surface of the floral bracts is lepidote, the spikes are usually ascending and, unlike the typical variety, the floral bracts may be slightly longer than the sepals.
