plant epiphytic or rupicolous, flowering up to 1.5m leaves dense rosulate, ligulate, by no means contracting above the sheath. leaves: sheath 12 cm max width, back chestnut brown, both sides dense lepidote minutely pitted; blade nearly linear, very slightly tapering towards the tip, 50 cm long, 9 - 11 cm wide, sparse and inconspicuous lepidote, with clear longitudinal folds in the upper half, tip rounded and mucronate. inflorescence: peduncle 50 cm high, 1 - 2 cm diam, glabrous; peduncle bracts leaflike, lower ones 28 cm long, 8 cm wide, deceasing gradually to the top; fertile part amply once-branched-paniculate, 80 cm high; primary bracts decidedly sheathlike, completely covering the axis, the lower ones ovate-triangular, 7 cm long, the tip blunt mucronate, sparse punctulate-lepidote, as long as the peduncle of the spike, the upper ones 3 - 4 cm long, suborbicular, a little shorter than the peduncle, both yellow or dull red towards the tip; spikes spreading, 20 - 25 cm long, ca 12 flowered, the lower pair a little smaller, ca 6 flowered; peduncle 6–10 cm long, sterile bracts towards the middle, ovate, bicarinate, with rigid leathery emarginate-apiculate tip, outside glabrous, inside inconspicuously lepidote, completely covering the peduncle, 2 cm long, 2.5 cm wide; rachis 4 sided, geniculate, green, internodes 15–20 mm long, protected by the primary bracts, at last visible; floral bracts exceeding or equalling the internodes, ovate, sub-carinate, 17–25 mm long, 17 mm maximum width, rigid leathery, inside inconspicuous lepidote, the outside towards the tip barely lepidote, at first the tip is acute apiculate later bifid. flowers 4–5 cm long, distichous, at and after anthesis conspicuous secund with petals pointing down; sepals free, symmetric, lanceolate, rigid leathery, 20–25 mm long, 10 mm wide, exceeding the bracts, petals linear-lanceolate, yellow, equalling or a little longer than the stamens, 10–15 mm connate, 40 mm long, 6 mm wide, stamens filament a little complanate, filaments joined with the petal up to the throat, anthers linear with a blunt tip, bottom sagittate, 1.5 mm long, 1 mm wide, pollen granules sulcate, with a single longitudinal promenence, style somewhat terete, 32 mm long, clearly longer than the stamens, stigma disc shaped- fimbriate. pistil: ovary pyramidal, 6 mm long, the loculi of the placentum equalling the middle, basifixed, ovules long caudate.
